Assignment 1: Characters and facial expresion
Due to some problems that were beyond my control I didn't have internet access until now so I'm extending the deadline until this Sunday (that's 03/25/07)
Let's start with some basic training, since we're "nubile young things" :D
Interesting characters and expressions are a key part of illustrating, so for this assignment you'll have to come up with your own character, just the head for now, and draw at least 6 different expressions of your choice.
No color is needed (in fact I'd recommend only line art) and it doesn't matter how realistic the character is, original/interesting is the key.
Since we're trying to improve our digital illustration skills I suggest you create your submission using a graphic tablet, but stroked paths or traditional pencil are also good.
Please try to organize your submission as in the example above and write the expression you intended to recreate under each instance of the character's head.
If you're feeling a bit confused on how to do it, read this extract from "Fun with a pencil" by Andrew Loomis, it should give you all the information you need.
You have until Sunday 03/18/07 to submit.
I'd like to repeat that this assignment is by no means mandatory, if you feel confident that you're already familiar with this topic or simply don't have the time/mood to do it, there's no problem.
When you want to submit something pls PM me, on Worth, with a link to your picture or e-mail it to me and I'll include it in this post. This way we'll keep the blog clean.

My "Circus" entry
Well, the contest is now over and it did better that I'd expected, yay 4 me :D.
A final update to this post with the link to the finished pic.
Major setback, I've lost the original in a PS error (damn I hate those errors), so I don't know if I'll make it
Only 12 hrs left until the deadline, guess i should start painting :(
A minor update, I've blocked some of the colors. I'm having bit of a dilemma on the skin color, I think I'm gonna go with the left, greenish tone.
Here's a rough sketch of the main character, not sure if I'm going to go with has-been strong man or has-been clown, I'll decide later on when I add some decor pieces.
Critiques and suggestions are highly appreciated :)

First off, a big WOOT for the new beginner illo contest, hope to see you all post an entry.
Second, since we're all here to improve, I propose a series of weekly challenges to help us enhance both our drawing/coloring skills and our imagination.
I'm thinking of something like draw a pose, create your own character... stuff like that. A brief tech documentation will be given for each challenge, when required, so you'll know how to do it.
We could each take turns inventing challenges, so everybody can get the exercise that they want.
So, what do you think?

Some of my drawlings
Ok, so I lack basic drawing skills, and am more interested in the artist's process than the final product. I sketch all the time in my notebook, but I dread the day I drop my books in the hallway and everyone sees my terrible drawings. So, i guess im pretty self conscious about my art. Anyway heres some of my stuff I haven't submitted to worth that you guys haven't seen.
An unfinished work, i know very ugly. I wanted a sort of watercolor feel, along with a dark, non realistic kinda mood.
does anyone else find it extremely difficult to format pictures on this blog? anyway, heres another work in progress.Ok and i dont know why that is underlined.

Hi guys
Hey DDR & TNF. I also invited LoS to join us. We haven't started utilizing the blog yet, but with the ant perspective coming up, we might want to. I've started working on one image, but with no scanner and my camera at the office, it will have to wait until tomorrow.
If you have something you're working on, let's see it and we can share ideas to make it better. By posting here, we all agree to waive the anonymity thing in the spirit of friendship and learning... I trust you guys, and we should be able to all trust each other. We can add more people as we see fit - but let's not blanketly invite people in the forums at first.
If this thing works out well, we could expand on it and bring more people in, though! It'd be nice to get some more accomplished artists to join us, too.
